5 Simple Things to Reduce Stress & Anxiety
Sam John

Are you feeling nervous, anxious, overwhelmed, stressed? Here's five things that you can do in your life to manage those feelings.

1. Intentional Breathing

First, the easiest thing to do is free and is available to anybody and everybody. Get oxygen into your system! That is done by just breathing, but it's not just normal breathing. It's intentional breathing. Sit in a comfortable chair and breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. Again, breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. Doing this about 10 times can be very, very relaxing for the brain because you are getting oxygen into your system, and that is what can help calm you.

2. Scanning

The second thing that you can do is called scanning. Basically, you are scanning your body, taking inventory of what's going on in your body. Take note of what your body is telling you. There may be some tension, some aches, some pains, some pressure inside of you that you need to be aware of. Your body will let you know if you're paying attention to it.

After scanning your body, next scan your thoughts and your emotions. What are you thinking? How are you feeling? Make sure you label your emotions correctly.

And last, scan your behavior. What have you done in the last 24 hours that makes you proud? What can learn from those last 24 hours to make today even better?

3. Take a 30 Minute Walk

Next, take a walk. I recommend walking with many of my clients and I actually try to do this very frequently myself. Going for a walk, even a short walk, can be a great way to just clear your head, get oxygen into your system and to your brain, and be able to calm yourself down. It's a really great way to take whatever's inside of you out.

4. Stretch

Stretching is another great tool to help manage your emotions. Something as simple as just stretching your body allows you to release tension, frustration and negative energy. It also allows your muscles to relax which is also extremely helpful for the brain as well.

5. Pet A Dog, Cat, or Another Furry Friend

And the last, number five, is pet a furry friend. Now, I'm not talking about your husband or friend who might be a little furry! I'm talking about a pet. If you have a pet, an animal friend. With a pet, you have a resource living with you that can actually help you reduce your stress. Sit down by your little furry creature and just pet them. They will just love it and be able to love on you too.

I hope these five things help you!
