What is ART Therapy?

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) uses your eye movement to reprocess where distressing memories, images, smells, sounds are stored in your brain so they no longer trigger strong emotional and physical reactions.

Less-Invasive - You won't have to share out loud all of the distressing details or recall the experience over and over.

Short -Term - You typically experience long-term symptom relief in as few as 1-5 sessions.

Evidence-Based - It combines elements of other psychotherapies including EMDR, CBT, and Gestalt.

Proven Effective - Research shows an average of 74% reduction in symptoms in an average of 3.5 sessions.

What is EMDR?

EYE MOVEMENT DESENSITIZATION & REPROCESSING (EMDR) is a form of trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy used to reprocess how your brain stores traumatic memories so they are no longer disruptive or cause you distress.

Rapid Improvement - Single-event traumas can typically be reprocessed using EMDR in 1-3 sessions.

Phased Approach - Your therapist will guide you through 8 phases of EMDR treatment, customized to your specific needs.

Time-Proven - Originally developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro as a treatment for PTSD, EMDR has been around for more than 3 decades

Frequently Asked Questions

How does ART Therapy work?

Accelerated Resolution Therapy helps you change the way you feel about a traumatic memory (or memories) rather than changing the facts. It uses eye movement and a type of image rescripting known as voluntary memory/image replacement, where you will replace a traumatic memory with a more positive one of your choosing.

Can eye movement therapy (ART Therapy or EMDR) be done virtually via telehealth?

Yes, in most cases it can be done virtually.Clients love the convenience and comfort of being at home (or the location of their choice) for sessions. We recommend you use a tablet-sized screen or larger for virtual sessions. In addition, you will be required to have someone else (friend or family member) on the premises during the entirety of your session.

Are eye movement therapies suitable for minors/children?

Yes! Both EMDR and ART Therapy can be used with minors. Not only are they effective for addressing big traumatic experiences, they are also extremely effective for dealing with little traumas caused by divorce, bullying, school changes, etc. These therapies have been successfully used with children as young as 6. In our practice, we more typically work with preteens and older.

Will I be awake and conscious during my sessions?

Yes! No hypnosis is involved and you will be fully awake during your sessions. Your therapist will guide you, but as the client, you are in complete control of your session including the pace of it. With ART Therapy specifically, you won’t even have to tell your therapist the details of your scene(trauma).

Will I still remember the traumatic event?

These therapies do not erase the memory. You won’t lose the memories but they will be less likely to trigger strong emotional and physical distress for you. If you are involved in a legal case and need to testify, we recommend you discuss this with your therapist prior to beginning therapy.

How does ART Therapy compare to EMDR?

Great question! Both are evidence-based psychotherapies that help clients heal from the symptoms and emotional distress caused by disturbing life experiences. Both use bilateral stimulation, in this case eye movement similar to what we experience during REM sleep, to reprocess how and where the negative memories are stored in our brain. ART Therapy tends to be less verbal and more visual than EMDR. With ART Therapy, a client does not have to share the details of the specific trauma in order to benefit from the therapy. We have both ART and EMDR trained therapists on staff.

How long does therapy take?

Your initial session with the therapist will be 50 minutes, during which time you will determine if eye movement therapy is a good fit for your specific needs and do the initial planning for your treatment. Eye movement therapy sessions are generally 90 minutes. The number of sessions needed varies, but average 5 or less. One of the most exciting things about this therapy is that clients can achieve dramatic, long-term symptom relief – for issues they may have been struggling with for years – in just a few sessions.

Do you take insurance?

We are considered an out-of-network provider and do not currently accept insurance or participate in any Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs). If you are unsure if you have out-of-network benefits, contact your insurance company and ask if your plan offers mental health benefits including counseling, and if so, at what reimbursement rate and do you need to meet a deductible first. Many of our clients choose to file a reimbursement claim with their insurance company and receive reimbursement of up to 80% of session cost. If you plan to file with your insurance, please let us know and we will be happy to provide you with a receipt that includes the additional documentation required. If you have an FSA card, we are also happy to accept it for payment.
